Surrogacy provides couples (and individuals) from all walks of life with an alternative way to have biological children of their own – even those couples deemed less-than-traditional by societal norms. In the 2008 Canadian documentary, Fatherhood Dreams, director Julia Ivanova, explores the stories of several gay couples who have become fathers either through adoption or surrogacy.
The film has been highly praised for its introspective look at families who -- through their basic desire to have children -- expand the very definition of the word “family.” It has also served as an inspiring testament for other gay couples out there who wish to start a family of their own and could benefit from the triumphant examples of others.
In the film and in extended interviews, the gay couples discuss the obstacles they’ve encountered and how they managed to make their dreams come true despite society’s predisposition for the heterosexual family. One man, who tells of how he had always wanted children of his own, explains that when he came out to his mother, she supported him but was instantly depressed because she believed it was now impossible for him to become a father. Now, as the proud father of his own biological twins by a surrogate mother, he muses over how new technologies have allowed him to fully attain his dreams.
Although they may not be your typical families, the moms and dads highlighted in the film all emphasize how innately natural it is to love and learn from their children – a theme in parenting which, in a happy, nurturing home, always seems to ring true regardless of the genders present.
