Surrogacy Gives Hope to Childless Couples

Our very own Andrea Muehlhaus and Tyler Zion interviewed by the OC Register.  Andrea tells her heartwarming story of her beautiful surrogacy journey for two Dads.

by: Jenna Jones, OC Register staff writer

On July 28, 2014, Andrea Muehlhaus underwent a C-section and gave birth to Dylan, a dark-haired baby boy, at Saddleback Memorial-Laguna Hills. The newborn took his first breath at 8:20 a.m. and weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces. He was perfectly healthy, with 10 fingers and 10 toes.
After the delivery and recovery, the baby went home with his fathers – Robbie Cronrod and Allen Artcliff-Cronrod, a married couple from Los Angeles. Since their first date, they had talked about wanting children, and Muehlhaus had given them that chance.

Muehlhaus lives in Westminster and has two children of her own, ages 10 and 6. She gave birth to a little boy for another gay couple three years ago. “I wanted to give back in some way, and for me personally, I wanted to help gay couples because they can’t have a child on their own,” Muehlhaus said. “They need someone else and I felt like I could be that person who could help them create their family.”
Muehlhaus is not genetically related to either of the surrogate children she carried. As a gestational surrogate, she was implanted with an embryo through in vitro fertilization. The egg was harvested from an egg donor and fertilized through one of the fathers’ sperm.
"...many couples who come to West Coast Surrogacy have suffered multiple miscarriages, serious illnesses and years of infertility." says Tyler Zion, Intended Parent Coordinator, West Coast Surrogacy, Inc.
A traditional surrogate is a woman who is artificially inseminated with a father’s sperm, then carries the child to term. She uses her own egg and is the child’s genetic mother. The couple seeking and using a surrogate are known as the “intended parents.”
Now a surrogate program coordinator at West Coast Surrogacy in Irvine, Muehlhaus matches surrogates to intended parents and guides them through the process. Her most recent surrogacy was handled independently before she started working there. Surrogacy agencies usually process commercial surrogacy cases in which a woman is paid to carry a child. West Coast Surrogacy coordinated 46 births last year and works solely with gestational surrogacy.
"During the matching process at West Coast Surrogacy, the surrogate’s and intended parents’ personal beliefs are taken into account." says Zion

CALIFORNIA MOM, CHINESE DADS: THE STORY OF AN AMERICAN SURROGATE

  @CNNMoney
CNN recently interviewed Audra Anderson, a West Coast Surrogacy Gestational Surrogate and Amy Kaplan, founder of West Coast Surrogacy (WCS) on the recent growth of international surrogacy. An increasing number of American women are becoming gestational surrogates for international couples who are unable to have a child without surrogacy. These couples come from all over the globe, including China, where the need for U.S.-based surrogate mothers is particularly prevalent. Amy Kaplan explains how roughly 40% of WCS's clients are from China, with a third of these intended parents being LGBT. Audra, who lives in California, is currently pregnant and carrying a baby for a Chinese LGBT couple with whom she’s worked with during a previous surrogacy agreement.

China to the United States to find a surrogate mother surge

When is the "Right Time" to Tell Your Child He/She Was Born Using an Egg Donor and/or a Surrogate Mother?

I recently read the following in a "Dear Abby" post:
Compliments of Delawareonline.com Jan 9, 2015
Dear Abby: Secret weighs on mother's mind
I am worried about how my 10-year-old son, "Jake," will take some news he's not aware of yet. I wasn't able to have children, so my husband and I turned to in vitro, using a donated egg from a family member. We thank God this method worked.
Our plan was to explain it to Jake when he got older, once he understood about the birds and the bees. Now I am starting to get this fear that he will be very upset when he learns about it and be angry with us.
I don't want him to go into a depression over it. What should we do? Should we wait like we planned?
— Mom In Chicago
Abby:
Not knowing Jake, I can't gauge his level of maturity. I'm not sure why being told how special he is, and how grateful you and your husband are to be his parents would send him into a depression. But because you think it might, discuss this with a child psychologist before talking to your son. Please don't put this off, because if other family members know about the egg donation, it is only a matter of time before the cat will be out of the bag, and it's better that Jake hears this information from you.
Bad manners

The biggest question that looms over the heads of parents (or intended parents) of children born using egg donation and/or surrogacy is whether or not to tell their children.  And if yes, when is the best time.  There is never a "bad" time to tell your child how his/her precious life began, as long as it is done with love and care!  Care, that you present it in a way to make your child feel like the blessing they truly are.  Love, is what brought about this decision to use donor eggs in the first place.  Let them know how very much they were wanted.  Show them how much of a miracle they are to you!

Many parents often feel anxious and are unsure of what to expect when they are faced with the thought of telling their child(ren) about the egg donor or surrogate mother who helped bring life to them.  We all want to instill "truth-telling" as our children grow up.  Why not start with your own truth!

Honesty - If you begin by telling your child(ren) the truth when they are very young, you are teaching them that they can trust you enough to tell you the truth as they are growing up.  We all model the kind of behavior we experience in our families day to day lives.  By telling our children the truth at a very early age, we not only teach them about how much they are loved, but we also help them to understand the many facets of real life - joy, pain, challenges, struggles, acceptance.  We also teach them about looking for alternatives, and not just accepting everything life throws at them.   Above all we teach them that we love them so much that we owe it to them to tell the truth about how they came to be!

Now that you have decided to tell your child(ren) they were conceived using an egg donor, how do you go about telling them?  If you're like many of us, this may not come ease.  Start practicing what you will say even before your child is born.  If you need help preparing, there are many books and websites on the topic of telling your children they were born via donor egg.

A few book suggestions on "Talking to your children about egg donation":
A Tiny Itsy Bitsy Gift of Life, An Egg Donor Story, A touching story of how a happy couple
of rabbits have their own baby by means of egg donation.,  Using rabbits in this story enables children to easily understand their conception in a simple and loving way.
Mommy, Was Your Tummy Big?. A mother elephant explains her use of donor eggs to her child. With charming illustrations and simple words, "Mommy, was your tummy big?" can help parents who used in vitro fertilization and donor eggs begin to explain the process to their small children. This book has been praised by many mental health professionals who work with fertility clinics and an NYU Child Study Center article offers it as an example of how to tell a young child about his/her donor egg origins.

Also highly recommend are: Birds of a Different Feather and One More Giraffe.

A few book suggestions on "Talking to your children about surrogacy":

Why I'm So Special: A Book About Surrogacy and Why I'm So So Special: A Book about Surrogacy With Two Dads.  both books by Carla Lewis Long tackle a very difficult, complicated subject in a sweet, whimsical way.  The latter is a lighthearted picture book on surrogacy with two daddies. Both books share a story that all parents who used a surrogate mother may share with their young children to let them know just how special they are. These stories are ultimately about hope, perseverance, and lots of love.
Organizations like Parents Via Egg Donation (PVED) and the Donor Conception Network advocate that its healthy and appropriate to be open and honest with a child about their origins, and suggests telling them at a young age.

The Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) strongly supports the principle that parents ought to tell their children about the fact that they were born using donor eggs.  The committee also considers that informing the child about non-identifying characteristics of the egg donor is in the child's best interests.  In addition, in those cases when all parties come to an agreement, it's advised to disclose personal data on the egg donor.  The committee acknowledges however that such a decision is of exceptionally personal nature and that it can be made only by the parents themselves (ASRM Ethics Committee, 2004)

Whatever you decide is right for you and your family is entirely a personal choice, one that should be thought through carefully!

West Coast Egg Donation, Inc. (WCED), and West Coast Surrogacy, Inc. (WCS) invite you to share your experiences with yow you told your child(ren) you used an egg donor and/or a surrogate mother to help bring them into this world!

If we can be of assistance to you in any way, helping ease any anxiety on this very important topic, our caring staff is here to help!.

What I Really Want for Christmas: How to Tell Your Family You're Having Kids!

As seen in The HuffPost Gay Voices.
By: Dr. Guy RinglerCalifornia Fertility Partners, Los Angeles CA
Board certified fertility physician in both Obstetrics and Gynecology
& Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

The holidays are a great time for celebration with family. Whether it's with candles or a Christmas tree, turkey or roast beef, long sessions around the dining-room table or the fireplace seem to be in order.

All the emphasis on family can make many of us in the LGBT community feel a little isolated for not having kids of our own, something many hadn't even considered until recent years. It can also instill a longing to start our own family. I've seen it with plenty of my gay patients and same-sex couples over the last two decades. Having the love and support of family and friends can be very helpful to all people pursuing fertility treatment.

But the decision regarding whether or not to share your dreams and plans with family members -- particularly over the holidays -- can bring up lots of issues and invite everyone to share their opinions on how things should be done. "How will it happen?" "Who will carry the pregnancy?" "Why would she do it that way?" "How much will it cost?" You'll get lots of questions from family members who haven't been down a surrogacy road before, but hopefully all from a perspective of caring.

The good news is that there are many treatment options today for gay and lesbian family building, and sharing your plans with loved ones during the holidays can help muster their support and engage them in the process.
Whatever your situation, here are some suggestions for those first conversations that I've shared with my gay patients over the past 20 years:
  • Do focus on your family members becoming grandparents, aunts, and uncles. That's probably what your parents have been looking forward to since you were born: to spoil a grandchild. That's part of their bond with you, their legacy. Focus on the growth of your family and their role in it. That will bring you all closer.
  • Don't review all the protocols and procedures at first, unless they ask. You wouldn't tell them about the details of your attempts to get pregnant if you were straight, so there's no need to go over the details of the conception. As they become engaged in the process and want to know more, you can share the parts that are comfortable for you.
  • Do make them feel like they're the first to know. Let them know...
