Surrogacy in India
The idea of outsourcing a business to another state or country is not a new concept. However, the idea of outsourcing surrogacy to India is a topic that the world is starting to learn about thanks to a recent segment on The Oprah Winfrey Show and NPR’s “Marketplace”. This report sparked many blog entries and opinions and to be honest, I am not alarmed by the divided opinions. What really makes me sad about this story is that in the photos of the surrogates from India, it appears they are hiding their faces in shame. Helping another woman or couple to have a baby is a great endeavor that these women should be proud of. Why a woman chooses to become a surrogate mother is very personal, whether it is altruistic or financially driven. It takes strength and courage not only for the women who become surrogates, but also for the individuals and couples that embark on the journey of parenthood through surrogacy no matter what country they are in.
