New medical breakthroughs are offering more and more pathways for survivors of cancer to experience the miracle of becoming parents.
Ovarian tissue harvesting is one of the newest developments in fertility medicine, allowing a thin sliver of a woman’s ovaries to be harvested and frozen, similar to the way sperm and embryos have been stored. The difference is that this delicate tissue can then be implanted into a woman after treatment, allowing her to produce her own eggs again.
Another procedure that is newly being offered is a procedure of storing unfertilized eggs rather than embryos. For women that do not have the luxury of waiting two months to hormonally stimulate and fertilize their eggs, this is an amazing option for women who must start cancer treatments immediately.
Another popular option for those cancer survivors unable to carry their own children, is surrogacy. Gestational surrogacy is the process by which an embryo is transferred into another woman's womb, to carry it until maturation and delivery. The intended mother can use her own eggs or that of an egg donor so that the surrogate is not biologically related to the child. Click here to learn more about surrogacy…..
According to Gina Shaw, breast cancer survivor and author of “Having Children After Cancer” writes that many survivors share the strong desire to have children, in part to show they have beat the disease and moved on with their lives. Click here to learn more about new medical procedures.
