The Cost of Surrogacy

Since the birth of the now-famous octuplets, talk of in vitro fertilization as a means of relatively inexpensive infertility treatment has remained etched throughout media discussion. Some have defended what Nadya Suleman did – having multiple fertilized embryos implanted all at once to better her odds of having a healthy child – by citing the great cost of each individual IVF treatment (approximately $12,000). This technique is beginning to be viewed as the conception option of the middle class, while other methods, such as surrogacy and egg donation are reserved only for the very wealthy.

Nothing could be further from the truth. As workers at a Chicago egg donation and surrogacy organization have observed, couples who turn to surrogacy as a way to have a child of their own rarely do so without making financial and personal sacrifices, but they always find the effort to be entirely worth it.

Robin von Halle, president of the Chicago-based fertility agency, says that some of their intended parents “take out second mortgages. Others work two or three jobs. We know one couple whose family and friends held benefits for them to help cover the costs. […] And nobody’s ever shown regret."

Similarly, at West Coast Surrogacy, intended parents have often made special efforts to cope with the financial toll of a surrogacy birth. Some have turned to their families for assistance, adjusted their living situations, or even cashed in on their retirement savings in order to meet the expense. Fortunately, the end result far outweighs the sacrifice.

So although the cost may seem daunting, it can be beneficial and comforting for couples and individuals considering surrogacy to know that it is not impossible, and it’s certainly not an option open to millionaires alone. Many people in similar financial situations have (and are) finding ways to make it happen. We hope that you can too!

If you have questions or concerns about the financial aspects of the surrogacy process, or about our organization in general, please feel free to call or write us at info@westcoastsurrogacy.com
